    Gianina, my twin sister, has an irrational aversion to bananas and cheese. She won't knowingly eat anything that contains bananas or cheese, and in fact, the mere mention of bananas could very well throw her into a fit. Oddly enough, one of her favorite foods is mango cheesecake and she will happily eat anything as long as no one mentions that it has bananas or cheese in it. Gianina's predilection annoys me not only because my favorite thing to eat is New York pizza, but also because it reminds me that when I was a child, I had an even stranger quirk: I refused to eat Asian food. A word of context is necessary. My mother is Chinese, originally from Shanghai. I straddle two cultures because I'm half Chinese and half Caucasian. As a child, I wandered through Hong Kong's fresh markets every day with my maid to buy fresh fish and vegetables that were sure to be steamed and stir-fried with copious amounts of oyster sauce . Some days my father and I would walk the streets to see what was there because I was curious. As a child, I didn't understand why my father made heads turn in front of the street....
