  • Essay / Literary Analysis of the Gettysburg Address - 787

At the beginning of the last paragraph, Lincoln says, “we cannot consecrate – we cannot consecrate – we cannot sanctify.” He uses this to emphasize that the people gathered there were not necessarily the most important and that attention must be paid to the sacrifices made by the soldiers. Throughout the speech, the words "we", "here", "consecrate" and "nation" are repeated. He uses the “we” to make the audience aware that this is America together and that they are equal. “Here” is reiterated while making Gettysburg the place from which they will propel, “dedicate” is used for its power, and “nation” is implemented to give a higher purpose. The repetition of “the people” at the end of the speech helps captivate listeners because it reminds them that they are honoring those who gave “the ultimate sacrifice” for them. Lincoln's implementation of repetition throughout the speech emphasizes his point of extolling the honor of the soldiers, engages the audience, and successfully encourages them to continue the fight.
