Therein lies the opportunity cost, a sacrifice one makes when choosing one option over another, because if large sums of money are spent on universities, it results in higher taxes and less money to spend elsewhere. Additionally, the number of graduates has increased sharply, which could lead to too many graduates. A study by the Office for National Statistics found that 47% of salaried workers with degrees obtained jobs that do not require a degree (Copping, 2013). So one could argue that there is no need for more graduates, because what about other jobs that don't require degrees? Would some people find it too undignified to want to take this main job now that they have a diploma? But if many have diplomas, is it worth as much?
