Wall cabinets are built in a wide variety of designs, materials, functions and sizes. Most wall cabinets are simply for storage, but these days people need furniture that is durable, sturdy, affordable and has enhanced functionality. Modular furniture provides components that can be combined to meet individual needs and tastes and that utilize all the space where they can be swapped and adjusted. In order to create a successful modular kitchen cabinet design, proper hanging mechanisms are necessary. It is important to understand the material properties and design of the suspension mechanism so that proper use can be achieved to ensure effective product design and user safety. Material selection is one of the most important aspects that must be considered before any suspension. mechanism is produced. This is because the material plays an important role in determining the suitability and durability of the suspension mechanism design. Nowadays, more advanced materials have been used to replace conventional materials because they provide more benefits (Myrdal, 2009). For example, in furniture manufacturing, conventional materials such as solid wood have been replaced by alternative wood such as particleboard, plywood, glulam, LVL or OSB due to their economic efficiency and their production. This study aims to find out a better solution by providing an alternative material and design to make the most important part of a wall cabinet which is the middle hanging......paper......gs but could produce a more resistant product. Therefore, using this material as a suspension mechanism could reduce the cost of raw materials while providing a strong and environmentally friendly alternative suspension mechanism. Hypothetically, if the proposed design (French cleat) and material (LVL) have same or better qualities than the existing design and material, it can be used as a hanging mechanism in modular kitchen cabinets. Therefore, the thesis proposes a new suspension mechanism design using LVL that could likely give similar or better loading capacity and mechanical properties compared to existing designs used in kitchen cabinets.
