Affirmative action, reverse discrimination, positive discrimination and equality in employment; These are all forms of discrimination, although they are not as distinct as typical types of discrimination. Many issues can be raised through affirmative action; what impact does human nature have on the use of positive action? How is affirmative action viewed in the UK compared to the US? What is the history of affirmative action in America? What is the impact of positive discrimination in international relations? Let's look strictly at the case of the UK and US, where affirmative action can take place in a multitude of places; such as employment and education. First of all, what are the benefits of affirmative action? When UC Berkeley, UCLA and Rice University all abandoned their affinity policies, minority admissions fell by as much as 61 percent. This is a surprisingly high number of students who are not admitted each year. The world operates on a global playing field; students need to be surrounded by a diverse student body to be able to play well with others in this new international economy. Additionally, many graduates who have benefited from affirmative action programs would tell you that they have better jobs, higher salaries, and an overall better life because of the benefit they were given. (Messerli) After reading the last paragraph, many people would wonder what could possibly be bad about affirmative action. The main concern for most individuals is that this is reverse discrimination; just like the discrimination against minorities of the past, but which is now aimed at the majority.
