  • Essay / Making chat activities with native speakers meaningful...

Before reading the text “Making chat activities with native speakers meaningful for EFL learners” by Jo Mynard, as we experience our current world , many technologies and inventions are invented. time. It is comfortable to live in our modern times. These technologies were invented to make our lives easier, particularly in terms of communication. Furthermore, the teaching and learning of English is now very influenced by technology. English can be learned from many media, such as CDs, cassettes and especially the Internet. In my opinion, the Internet is one of the most brilliant inventions; with just one click it gives us a lot of information. The Internet also has other advantages, for example, we can now instantly communicate with people on the other side of the world by chatting. In my opinion, the author is trying to convince readers that learners' communicative skills will be improved by doing chat activities with native speakers. Even if some learners have used a chat room before, they may never interact with native speakers of the target language. Moreover, we learn English only a few lessons in the book or in class. If we chat with native speakers, we will have more opportunities to use varied vocabulary; not only limited in lessons. Also, from my real experience, my friends who have a lot of foreign friends to chat are pretty good at English. They always mentioned that chatting with native speakers helped them improve their English better than studying in class. No teacher interrupts them or corrects their mistakes. Personally, I agree with them on this point. Not only will students practice interviewing guests, but they may also be interviewed. Using each......in the middle of a sheet......speakers will improve learners' communication skills, but this type of activity also helps learners explore the world more widely without going to the 'stranger. Learners can learn about another culture, which makes them understand the differences of each country. More importantly, whatever learning is expected to come from insight, the act of discussing will increase learners' confidence to be able to communicate later in a real conversation. There are also certain points which contradict this text. Chatting may not train learners' pronunciation. Learners won't understand any accents because they just type the messages and have no chance of hearing the native speakers' voices. In short, chatting is a good type of activity to use in English class, but the teacher should add other activities that practice learners' pronunciation in order to make learning more effective..
