    As a Chinese international student at Western Michigan University, this is a great opportunity for me to give the presentation to talk about music – Peking Opera Beijing, which comes from my own country. Peking Opera has existed for over 200 years. It is widely considered the highest expression of Chinese culture. It is known as one of the three major theater systems in the world. Although it is called Peking Opera, its origins are not in Beijing but in the Chinese provinces of Anhui and Hubei. Peking Opera draws its two main melodies, Xi Pi and Er Huang, from the operas of Anhui and Hubei. He then absorbed music and tunes from other operas and musical arts in China. However, during the Cultural Revolution (1966-1976), Peking Opera suffered, as did other types of opera in China. All traditional plays reflecting the Old Societies were banned from performance. The famous Eight Model Coins, featuring communist activities during the Anti-Japanese War and the Civil War with the Nationalists, as well as class struggles after the founding of the People's Republic. In this presentation, I will talk about the characteristics of traditional and revolutionary Peking opera, as well as some main differences between traditional and revolutionary opera. The basic elements of Peking Opera are Lianpu (opera masks), vocal production, stage speech. , song and lyrics, and music. Lianpu is formed through the long-term practice of drama artists and their understanding and judgment of roles in plays. It’s the colorful dressing of the actors’ faces. By using transformative and exaggerated figures, professional spectators could easily identify the characteristics of a role. First, the story of Revolutionary Opera is based on communist activities during the Anti-Japanese War and the civil war with the Nationalists. However, the history of traditional opera is mainly based on historical novels or traditional stories about civil, political and military struggles. Second, the difference between the song and the lyrics. In revolutionary opera, the songs are more narrative; and the lyrics are more modern and easy to understand; however, in traditional opera, the song is usually high-pitched and the lyrics are written in two-line couplets. Finally, the music between traditional and revolutionary opera is different.
