  • Essay / Analysis of Dorothea Orem's Nursing Theory

Analysis of Dorothea Orem's Nursing TheoryThe major theory that will be analyzed in this article is Orem's Self-Care Deficit Nursing Theory (SCDNT) . The method used to analyze Dorothea Orem's theory is Walker and Avant Theory Analysis (WAT). Theoretical analysis is a process of evaluating nursing theory. The WAT consists of seven stages. The stages define the origins, meaning, logic, usefulness, details, structure, and testability of the theory (McEwen & Wills, 2011). “Critical reflection of a theory determines the extent to which the theory achieves its goal” (McEwen & Wills, 2011, p.95). Critical reflection will therefore be applied to the SCDNT. The purpose of this article is to analyze and critique SCDNT using the WAT theoretical analysis method. Description of TheoryOrigins of TheoryThe origins of SCDNT began when Dorothea was asked to write the nursing curriculum for the Washington Department of Health, Education, and Welfare. , D.C. Along with other colleagues, she began the process of creating the program and during this time, SCDNT began to grow. She published her first book on nursing theory in 1971 (McEwen & Wills, 2011). Furthermore, she mentions that no particular theorist based her theory (McEwen & Wills, 2011). Meaning of the Theory There are three main concepts in SCDNT. The concepts are self-care, self-care deficit, and nursing systems (McEwen and Wills, 2011). Additionally, authors McEwen and Willis break down Orem's self-care theory with several conditions. They are universal, developmental, health deviant, and therapeutic (McEwen & Wills, 2011). Additionally, the concepts of deliberate action and product of nursing are defined.DefinitionsThe definition of self-care according to O...... middle of article ......g in positive patient outcomes . In conclusion, SCDNT was analyzed and found to be beneficial for the future of nursing.
