    Many parents find themselves using frequent sayings such as "don't touch that", don't do that" and "stop being mean to your sister! Along with these words, parents again refer to a specific passage from the Bible, Proverbs 22:15, which states: Foolishness is bound up in the heart of the child; but the rod of correction will drive him away from him. Proverbs chapters 22 and 23 talk about how the rod should be used and when. It also tells parents that spanking the child will not kill him. Many researchers and parents would say that these facts and statements cause harm, but if they could understand the limitations of the teachings, integrate communication, and set boundaries, using a rod would instill wisdom, instruction, and understanding in a child. Limits of teachings. Several forms of emotional harm have been associated with corporal punishment in children, such as confusion, aggressive behavior, and mental illness. These are all signs of abuse or, to be more precise, of a parent who did not fully understand the limitations of the biblical approach. On the other hand, are these factual assertions? Even research cannot support these claims. Afifi, TO, Monta, NP, Dasiewicz, P., MacMillan, HL, and Sareen, J. (2012), authors of a review titled Physical Punishment and Mental Disorders: Results From a Nationally Representative US Sample, clearly state that research is erroneous and no results can be proven showing a link between corporal punishment and mental disorders. Parents may have heard “spare the rod, spoil the child,” but there is so much more behind this saying.
