Essay / I am a descendant of immigrants - 519
Like most Americans, I am a descendant of immigrants. I came to the United States 9 years ago, when I was 12 years old. My parents are like other traditional Chinese parents who wanted their children to become talented people. I always had arguments with my parents about their old ideas, especially after I came to America and grew accustomed to the belief in freedom here. However, the experience I had between high school and community college completely changed my life. I lived in Oakland and went to school there. When I was a freshman in high school, I didn't realize how important education is, and on top of that the pressure that was added to me from my parents and the environment around me , I didn't want to be serious about school at all. My parents always wanted me to take the time to study and talk to me about the importance of education, but I believed that people can succeed without education. Therefore, under the command of my rebellious heart, I started skipping class and became lazy in school. The first two years of high school always went well, and I always got grades ranging from A's to C's, but things quickly got worse since I started my freshman year. During my first year of high school, I often skipped classes, slept in class, and didn't even do any of my homework. At the end of the school term, I failed all six courses and my average was well below the passing average. My parents and I argued about my grades and the school even sat us down in the parent center to work out our problem with a psychologist. After the discussion between my parents, the psychologist and me, my parents seem changed, they no longer hold me as before. Even though I still thought that education is not important, I started working hard to catch up on all the courses I failed to graduate from high school with because I realized the hope they put in me and I don't want them to be disappointed again. During my senior year of high school, I not only took six classes, but I also worked on a program called Cyber High to retake all of my failed classes with high grades, and I also took additional courses to average my GPA in order to meet graduates. requirements.
