  • Essay / What is positive and positive liberty in capitalism...

In chapter four, The Capitalist Market: How It Really Works, by Wright and Rogers, human liberty has two parts, liberty negative and positive freedom. Positive freedom is “the real capacity of people to do things” (Wright and Rogers, 48). A person is able to do more things and has a greater scope on what they want to act and do in the world. Positive freedom gives a person unlimited choice about what they want to do. The second freedom is negative freedom, which is “the absence of coercion” (48). Negative liberty is when no one directly orders someone to do things against their own will. It is an act of choice by a person. People have the ability to control what they want to do and their own actions unless they agree to follow someone else's orders. An example of negative freedom would be a contract without constraint. Positive and negative freedom can be applied to gender relations. Gender relations are how a man or woman represents themselves in their own society and in their home. According to Wright and Rogers, the male-dominated world is wearing out and women are gaining recognition (28). In chapter two, he lists the inequalities women faced: until the 1920s, they could not vote in America, until the 1930s, they could not hold a passport in their name. With both positive and negative freedoms, women now have the right to choose the type of work or actions they wish to perform, but nothing against their own will. Gender relations between men and women can also apply to positive freedom. With positive freedom, women and men have “the freedom to rather than the freedom to” (48). They can choose to do the type of work they want. Women can do "men's work", such as...... middle of paper...... the norms are tattoos. Today, it is normal for most young adults to have tattoos or piercings. In Kang and Jones' article titled "Why Do People Get Tattoos?" », 15% of young adults in 2003 had tattoos (42). It is a form of self-expression and art, and a way for young people to find independence (42). Men and women have different standards when it comes to what tattoos they get. Men tend to have more masculine tattoos, while women tend to have more feminine tattoos (44). Even though it is considered normal to get a tattoo today, most employers still have a problem with this type of tattoo. Most employers want their employees with tattoos to cover them so that they are not visible at work (46). Others view people with tattoos as stupid and troublemakers (46). Tattoos, as a social norm, prove that in some cases they are acceptable and in other cases they still cause problems like stereotyping..
