In “An Inspector Calls”, by JB Priestley, Mr Arthur Birling is a wealthy industrialist in addition to being the father of Eric and Sheila Birling. Mrs. Birling, his wife, is of a higher social standing than Mr. Birling himself, although Mr. Birling leads a socially genteel life: "You will apologize immediately...I am a public man," demonstrates Mr. . Birling trying to use his social power against the inspector but to no avail. The inspector reminds Mr. Birling that Birling is not only responsible for his actions, but also for his failure to understand that his public position carries a duty of responsibility to others. Interestingly, this attitude draws on the traditional notion that the upper classes take responsibility for the welfare of the lower classes, but in the newer, more democratic life of Britain, "public men » do not necessarily belong to a higher social class, even if they have more public privileges; in any case, their position of power comes with responsibilities.
