  • Essay / Ethical Issues in Sports - 700

The health and fitness industry faces many ethical issues that have been of great interest to me. I've never purchased a health club membership, but through this reading I've learned a lot about how they work. It amazed me that health clubs pushed their sales representatives to attract 200 to 300 new members per month (Amend, 1992). This is a large number of people for such a short period of time, which means that some members are not fully aware of the fine print of the membership agreement. The reading also mentions that more than half of the instructors of these clubs do not have valid certification (Copeland et al, 1988). This is unethical because members pay each month for the services of a trained staff member to help them exercise and get in shape. Members' safety could also be at risk by working with an unqualified trainer. Learning how these companies do business made me want to wait as long as possible to join a gym. Among the readings, the most interesting topic for me was ticket sales. I've always been interested in selling tickets, but never realized what it entails. Everyone needs a ticket to attend a sporting event, but getting one can be a challenge. The guidelines and decisions made to decide who should get tickets and how much they should receive really gave me pause. The question is should a season ticket holder sit next to someone who only attends one or two games a year? Or vice versa, it's an ethical question in ticket sales. I think season ticket holders should have first choice on which seats they want for all games. Supporters who are not season ticket holders should be able to purchase remaining tickets, if it is a seat next to a season ticket holder. I think Eve... middle of paper... with no choice but to accept illegal money. If the NCAA would simply provide these athletes with some type of payment, they would be less likely to violate NCAA rules. After reading the article, I now have a better understanding of the different ethical issues in the sports industry, from professional teams to how facilities are managed. . The reading had a mostly positive impact. The article was very interesting and made me think more critically about the size of the sports industry. I now see some questions a little differently due to reading. The main thing I learned from this reading is an understanding of all the different opportunities and issues in the sports industry, from front office to facility management. With the industry being so large and continuing to grow, the sky is the limit for a great career in this field..References
