Essay / Happiness and the Definition of Happiness - 2038
For many years, studies were carried out on illness and its causes, such as illnesses, etc.…but in 1938, Dr. Arlie Bock, director of the department of hygiene at Harvard University, wondered if studying the sick was only half the story. He decided to reverse this research by studying healthy young men. He believed that there were other factors that contributed to happiness than money. Research called the Grant Study has been following a cohort of 268 Harvard graduates for seven decades, 125 of the men are still alive and 114 are still participating in the study. The other focused on 456 men who grew up in inner-city Boston. Of that group, 226 are alive and 161 are still active in the study, which requires the men to respond to questionnaires every two years and be interviewed personally every 15 years. After following both groups from adolescence through retirement, the researchers discovered several factors that predicted healthy aging. They said it is important to limit the amount of alcohol an individual drinks, get more exercise and maintain a healthy weight. They also found that a good marriage, education and mature coping skills can also contribute to a happy life. The study also reveals that men experience "warm relationships" later in life. A man named George Vaillant attempted to measure this study by examining each individual's home.
