This occurs when the cartilage in the knee joint breaks down and the bone underneath begins to deteriorate, causing pain, stiffness, swelling, and compromised function of the joint. Osteoarthritis is the most common type of knee arthritis and primarily affects middle-aged and elderly people (Srikulmontree 2012).
