According to the article “Are books better than movies?” ”, “Movies can bring entire worlds to life before our eyes, make characters living, breathing blood, but books let you experience it all” (“Are books better than movies?”). Very often, book lovers are not satisfied with the film adaptation of their favorite book. There's no doubt that there have been some excellent films based on books, but that's no substitute for reading the novel itself. It's better to read books than watch a movie. This is better because often the film tends to misinterpret information, which alters the plot and lacks sufficient character development. One of the many famous film adaptations is from The Twilight Saga series of teen novels. Written by Stéphanie Meyer, it was a huge success. The series is about a male vampire (Edward Cullen) and a human woman (Isabella Swan) who fall in love and struggle to maintain their relationship. Teenagers rushed to get the books off the presses and staked out movie theaters the first weekend they were released. In its first weekend, the film was released in theaters and grossed over $69,637,740. It also ranked the film number one out of 3,419 across America ("Twilight (2008) - Box Office Mojo."). In the film versions, the director seems to neglect elements that the reader finds essential to the plot. In the first Twilight book, when Edward and Bella get out of the car, he doesn't touch her because he doesn't want to risk losing control (Meyer). In the film directed by Catherine Hardwicke, he puts his arm around Bella's shoulders and declares that he would go to hell anyway (Hardwicke). When the director did this, he changed the plot because in the book, none of the other characters knew that Edward and Bella were talking. Then all of a sudden, Edward and Bella were in the middle of a piece of paper...the opportunity to increase their vocabulary and knowledge. Movies are not equivalent to books because they do not meet the following criteria. They don't have a full character analysis like the book and don't stick to the story of the book. Directors tend to push their creative liberties too far and start changing the plot and creating new frames of the story.
