As Bhutan is predominantly a Buddhist country, people around the world would probably have the idea of a peaceful family life which is much more harmonious than many other countries. However, it would be a big surprise on their part to find that domestic violence is quite common in Bhutan despite a relatively slow rate of urbanization compared to neighboring countries. In author Roxanne Dryden-Edwards' research article on domestic violence, page #1, he states “Domestic violence is a well-known and often used term. Although it can describe a variety of violent relationships, such as child abuse or elder abuse, it most often applies to an intimate relationship between two adults in which one partner uses a pattern of aggression and acts of intimidation to assert power and control over the other partner. » In Bhutan, domestic violence is best understood as physical violence between spouses, with women and children being the usual victims. No one really seems to know that domestic violence is prevalent in Bhutan. One concerned authority appears much less sensitive to accusations of underreporting domestic violence. We won't hear much about it from the appropriate organizations and their citizens, nor are law enforcement agencies reluctant to release relevant information on these issues. Although Bhutan is guided by the philosophy of Gross National Happiness and is considered a genderless society Despite prejudice and equality in legislation, policies and cultural traditions, domestic violence is prevalent in Bhutanese society. Additionally, Bhutan is the country most affected by violence against women. Domestic violence is closely associated with traditional gender roles and definitions of manhood and masculinity. Women constitute the vulnerable group of victims of domestic violence and women especially feel the greatest need to do to resolve the problem of violence prevalent in the society. Therefore, it is appropriate to recommend that awareness programs on women's rights under different laws and conventions should be conducted regularly. Although the RGoB has taken necessary steps to combat domestic violence, such as drafting a bill ensuring zero tolerance towards domestic violence, it is of great importance to publicize this law to the people of the nation and absolute implementation of the law is also of vital importance to make a difference. There is even a need to establish branches of RENEW, NCWC and WCPU across countries so that problems of violence can be properly addressed..
