During his journey, Siddhartha spotted a very old and sick man. This made the prince think a lot about life and inevitable old age. On his second trip to the city, he saw a man crying in pain and about to die. This made Siddhartha think a lot about how illness can happen to anyone at any time. On his third trip, he saw some people carrying a corpse that was to be properly burned. This caused Siddhartha a lot of grief and reflection on the fact that every living being is subject to death at some point. The last instance took place when Siddhartha spotted a monk and saw the simple but useful life he led. This made the prince want to become a monk as well.
