  • Essay / Chanel and Natalia Goncharova - 1745

Living in a world without innovators and without history would create boredom. With boredom, we wouldn't have the great designers and artists that we are lucky to have. Chanel being one of the greatest and most famous designers, she created jersey knitting wearable in her everyday clothes and Natalia Goncharova is famous for her originality of Rayonism, a way of painting and expressing one's beliefs spiritual through vibrant colors. These two women occupy an exceptional place in history by creating through their work a more radical and more modern way of life. Chanel (pronounced Shanel) revolutionized Haute Couture at the age of 20. She was an innovative young designer with a strong and unique personality which showed in her designs. She replaced the restrictive corset with comfortable suits and longer, straighter dresses. The silhouette of Chanel's designs was less fitted and more focused on comfort. The very popular Chanel suit consisted of a knee-length skirt and a boxy jacket. Chanel introduced the world to her cardigan jacket in 1925. Her designs were incredibly popular with the elite and powerful. Chanel became a symbol of wealth and status for the majority of the 20th century. In 1909, Chanel opened her boutique in Paris to sell hats. Her hats were worn by famous actresses who helped build the Chanel name. In 1913, she began using jersey in her clothing. “Her line of jersey clothing was a reaction to lifestyle changes associated with World War I” (wikipedia.com/Chanel). In 1914, World War I led to a change in design, with women working in factories instead of men. They needed warm clothing that was resistant to working conditions. Chanel's designs were inspired at the time when women's sports were being introduced... middle of paper ... the freedoms they wanted, they requested French nationalization on April 14 (Bowlt, 169). They were granted full French citizenship on September 8, securing their lives, their homes and their futures. They remained in Paris throughout the war. Life during the Nazi occupation was tough, but not as tough as one might expect. There have been surprisingly many exhibitions in which Goncharova and Larionov have exhibited. Goncharova also received a commission for a series of plays performed in Paris from 1940 to 1942. Despite difficult times, the two artistic innovators left their mark on the history of today's world. Their art and fashion has inspired us and our current designers to come up with new and exciting things. Through our current events and their past experiences and creations, we can create something untouchable that will inspire future artists to continue inventing a work of art..
