With reference to two poems from the anthology, compare and contrast the respective representations of war. In this essay, two poems will be compared and contrasted on their views of war. The two poems to be analyzed will be “Exposure” by Wilfred Owen and “Base Details” by Siegfried Sassoon. These two poems seem incredibly similar at first because the poets are both satirists who describe war as both horribly horrible and stupid. They satirize generals and senior officers, especially because of the hypocritical way they live. The way the poems are written is also very similar in style. So what is the point of this comparison? There are some differences in terms of the length of the poem, the amount of imagery, the amount of satire, etc. There are some similarities between the use of images, sound and structure, but also some differences, meaning we can explore the horrors of the First World War in more depth. depth. Both poets use imagery very well to convey simple messages about the issues of war. Metaphorical language is often used so it will be analyzed in detail with other factors such as similes also analyzed. We can see that Sassoon's poem is much shorter than Owens', so there are more images in "Exposure." However, in the second line of the base details, "I would live with scarlet majors at the base", we can see the use of a metaphor. The word "scarlet" suggests that the majors have blood on their hands, which symbolizes how they sent young men to die - which Sassoon satirizes. Second, “And when the war is over and the youth are dead,” uses a metaphor to describe young soldiers. The word "stone" is a metaphor that implies and exaggerates the fact that soldiers don't stand a chance on the front line. This line constitutes the middle of the paper, the structure of identity and skillful writing makes for insightful reading. Now that the analysis is complete, do these poems represent war well and are they similar? Both compositions do not show the war well but they reveal some hidden truths of the war and when read after the war they may have been quite frightening to analyze. As for the similarities and differences? The two poets got along well and shared the same ideas. It is clear that they are destroying the systems in place during the war. However, Owen persists on how the soldiers were treated, while Sassoon focuses on how the officers were treated – well. These pieces of poetry are extremely good and represent a very difficult time for England. It's a shame that more people don't write their thoughts through poetry, because it's a sharp and impactful way of telling something..
