  • Essay / Amish Culture and Mennonite Culture - 1175

I chose to research Amish culture because it is very distinct from the rest of the modern world. There are now many "reality" shows that feature the Amish, but I can't be sure that what is said on television is actually accurate. “The Amish people of America are an ancient religious sect, direct descendants of the Anabaptists of 16th century Europe. » (Powell 2014) The Amish are similar to Mennonite culture, but should not be confused. The founder of this culture was Jakob Ammann and he started this way of life in 1639. The Amish live a simple and simple lifestyle that remains “old fashioned”. According to Wikipedia, the population of the Amish community today is approximately 281,675 people (2014). The origin of the culture comes from Switzerland and Germany. Today, there are Amish populations throughout the United States and other parts of the world. Wikipedia states that areas with significant Amish populations are Pennsylvania, Delaware, Indiana, New York, and Ontario in Canada. In the 18th century, Amish Mennonites began to migrate due to factors such as religious wars, poverty, and religious persecution. (2014) “Early Amish immigrants made their way to Berks County, Pennsylvania, but later moved away, motivated by land issues and security concerns related to the French and Indian War. » (na 2014) Most Amish speak Dutch, English, and Pennsylvania German. Pennsylvania Dutch is primarily used for things like dinner conversations and church preaching. English is used for reading and writing, school teaching and business and German is used for prayer and singing in religious services. “Symbolic of their faith, Amish clothing styles encourage humility and separation from the world. » (Robinson 2012) All clothing is very simple, usually dark and middle of paper...... The average Amish family consists of about seven children due to the fact that the Amish do not believe in birth control . As a sociologist working with Amish culture, I would need to know that the Amish try to avoid the outside world for religious and cultural reasons. I would also be aware that in Amish country there are slow moving vehicles to watch out for and there is also private property that I should not enter. I have to understand that the Amish do not like to be treated as an attraction and they do not like having their photo or any video taken of them because they consider it an unacceptable act of pride. Finally, I wouldn't need to be offended by people who keep their distance and avoid my company or conversation because they are not doing it out of rudeness but because I don't respect their lifestyle and they try to avoid "pollution ».”.
