Essay / A Thought on Visiting the Metropolitan Museum of Art
For my cultural event, I chose to visit the Metropolitan Museum of Art. I always wanted, even when I lived in Portland, to visit it and experience that feeling so popular among those who have already been there. I have often imagined what it would be like, but when, on Saturday October 14, I went there for the first time, I was speechless. It was much more than I imagined. I spent 4 hours there and during that time I was only able to see the first floor and briefly walk around the second floor. Say no to plagiarism. I saw the sculpture of Adam by Tullio Lombardo, Alhéus and Arethusa by Battista Lorenzi, Andromeda and the monster by Domenico Gaidi, Ugolino and his sons, my favorite of all because of the reality of the expressions on the faces of the sculpture and the astonishing detailed work done by Jean Baptise Carpealle. These are just a few of everything I saw, the ones that stuck with me because they were so amazing. From this gallery I entered another, a gallery which houses pieces from the 19th and 18th centuries, with all their ancient elements. furniture. Rooms filled with a completely different atmosphere than mine or what I'm used to. Beautiful chairs, rugs, paintings invited me to touch them, to feel their culture, to hear the noises they would make, but of course I was forbidden to be touched or even approach them. After that, I browsed some wonderful galleries of African art. Art, which took me to a world completely different from their own culture. I walked past masks, tableware, chairs, and the millions of textures and colors of wood they were made from. And then I was led into another room, a gallery of ancient Greek works. This was probably the most interesting room for me because I always found the Greek culture the most amazing of all and once I even tried to learn the language, but I didn't succeed and so with time she disappeared from my memory. In this gallery, I once again saw magnificent thousand-year-old dishes. I felt like I was there with them, as old as they were, living a small part of their lives. This room led me to another room called “The First Year”. It is a room filled with Asian culture, especially Chinese as well as other similar cultures. I have seen and read about the Great Wall of China, how it was built, its length and its function. I learned that it is one of three man-made structures visible from the moon. Following this room is a gallery filled with weapons and old soldiers' outfits. Because I am against violence and also because I am a woman, this room did not seem very interesting to me so I quickly looked through it upstairs. There I found a gallery of musical instruments. No words can describe how beautiful and unique some of them are! I saw many types of flutes, guitars, organs and violins. They were all different depending on the country they came from, some appearing stranger than others. But it was perhaps in the gallery of European paintings that I felt most alive. Because I love drawing, seeing some of the greatest works of art has been very inspiring to me. Magnificent drawings, thousands of years old, struck me with their beauty. I was jealous of living now and not in.
