Essay / The Great Depression - 671
Return to the 20th century in depression and anger. The 20th century is when European theater turned towards more realistic themed plays. The Great Depression contributed greatly to this. The 20th century theater is the time when the Great Depression hit Europe. It is for this reason that playwrights began to make plays about realism like John Osborn's Look Back in Anger. The Great Depression not only affected the United States, Europe also suffered because the United States was a major trading country for Europe (Pugh). Even though in Europe there were not as many unemployed, most people still had jobs (Pugh). What people were worried about was how far the money would go (Pugh). As a result, marriage rates have declined overall. But people started getting married younger, regardless of age (Pugh). Fortunately, the crime rate has decreased. But some common laws were ignored, for example speed limits were ignored (Pugh). Throughout this depression there were periods of growth in the economy (Pugh). Newspapers have been one of the hardest hit areas; there was nothing to report since crime went down (Pugh). So when a major event occurred in the wake of the Great Depression, newspapers took advantage of it. This great event was the Great War or the First World War. Great Britain declared war on Germany on August 4, 1914 (Rosenberg). Britain declared war on Germany for invading Belgium (Rosenberg). One of the German submarines sank the British ship RMS Lusitania on May 7, 1915 (Rosenberg). In January 1917, the Germans attempted to send the Zimmerman telegram to Mexico to bring them to war, but the British decoded the message and prevented it (Rosenberg). The Great War was to end on June 28, 1919 with the signing of the Treaty of ...... middle of paper ...... (Heilpein). The play is said to lack human enthusiasm (Trussler, 322). The central protagonist is Jimmy Porter (Bolt). Jimmy is a very violent individual (Bolt). But he only loves his father and his father (Bolt). Jimmy has a negative attitude towards women due to his past experiences (Bolt). Because of this hatred towards girls, he wants to take revenge on them and make them feel what he felt (Bolt). Jimmy has an internal conflict with wanting to make his mother mad, he loves her anger (Bolt). The story ends with Jimmy coming to terms with himself and a character named Alison starting to act like his mother (Bolt). John Osborn had a great influence on other equally traditionalist playwrights. But one thing is certain, the 20th century is a century of depression and war that will never change, but whose plays will always change in popularity and style..
