    The Olympic Centenary Congress in Paris recognized these issues and included the environment as a “third pillar” of the Olympic Charter, alongside sport and culture. The United Nations Environment Program (UNEP), now a veteran and influential player in this field, was among the first to get involved alongside the International Olympic Committee (IOC) to work on environmental sustainability issues during of the Olympic Games.
