  • Essay / Caribbean Immigration Essay - 727

Although English is a very common language, Caribbean immigrants still come to the United States and have a very difficult time adapting to change. They are stereotyped and misunderstood. As an advocate for this group, I would like to help these immigrants adapt to the United States and educate foreigners about their culture. There are many different cultures that are similar and most people migrating to the United States from the Caribbean are elderly. It's common to hear that older people are set in their ways, so I would do my best to find support groups for this group to assimilate. In the Caribbean, a hunt is as normal as a walk on the beach. In one situation where I am a social worker assigned to a case, a Caribbean mother under investigation by Child Protective Services for beating her child with a "switch" or what is called a “tan stick” in the Caribbean. I would try to be as culturally competent as possible and respect my client's culture while trying to advise her and provide her with the resources she needs. Child abuse and social work aren't topics you hear a lot about if you live on an island. There is also a shortage of mental health professionals. There are many immigrants I could have chosen as my target group. I am drawn to this population and hope this group will open my eyes to things I have never seen.
