  • Essay / Essay on Vygotsky's Theory of Cognitive Development

Children tend to learn more when they know why what they are learning is important and if that material is presented in an interesting way. Take for example a kindergarten teacher who has to teach her class the different shapes. Instead of just showing her students a poster with the different shapes, she asks them to get up from their seats and start exploring the classroom looking for different shaped objects. Once they have found objects, have them explain to the class what the object is and what shape it is. This exercise will not only help other students learn the shape of the object, but it will also help the student who is sharing. Piaget believed that children's cognitive growth was enhanced when they were physically capable of experiencing certain situations. By asking students to share with the class the shape of their objects, they encourage their public speaking.
