Essay / criminology - 1206
Five literary works written by eminent authors and academics in the field of criminology will be read, interpreted and analyzed during this essay. The readings cover a wide variety of criminology topics, namely: the dynamics and policing of public disorder, philosophy, the positive and negative aspects of the legalization of prostitution, the conflict between legal institutions and representatives. Finally, the contradictory government policies that have dealt with the normalization of crime within society, applying both positive and negative impacts that are relevant to each reading. In chapter two of Mark Rowlands' book, The Philosopher at the End of the Universe, the author analyzes a modern science. A film entitled The Matrix to explain the main philosophical theories surrounding the theme of reality. Descartes' theory, made famous by meditations, holds that how does an individual know that they are truly awake or not just dreaming? Rowlands (2005) then goes on to explain epistemology, known as the field that deals with knowledge in philosophy. He explains that our five senses create our own individual world and interpret our individual world that we see and which is part of our self-concept. However, from the outside, we doubt the world around us and are not the knowledgeable creatures we think we are. Descartes' theory then explains how he believes that we may live in a real world, but a certain individual known as an evil demon is scamming us into believing this. Rowlands explains it through the matrix. The strength of this chapter is that it explains complex philosophical theories through a modern, basic interpretation of the science fiction film The Matrix, meaning that questioning reality is easy..... . middle of article...... ent academic sources to provide evidence that society's tolerance of committed crime has increased and how criminal justice systems have responded with contradictory policies, but this consists solely of criminologists' thinking and perhaps limits the article in many ways, as they only see this from a certain point of view and could be unintentionally biased. After reading the five literary works on a wide variety of topics ranging from philosophy to the legalization of prostitution, it has greatly improved my knowledge and I am now able to understand a broader context of criminology as a whole. By reading these literary works, I now feel that I am able to interpret certain academic theories and thoughts and apply them to my essays when necessary, but I still have to recognize that I need to critically analyze them to find the strengths and weaknesses..
