Essay / ADHD in the Health Care Setting - 646
The health care setting plays a critical role in the diagnosis and care of children with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). The diversity of services available and the journeys that the child and family inevitably find themselves taking can be long and arduous, so it is crucial to find a service that will meet the needs of both. As defined by the Department of Health (2001), “Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) in children is characterized by persistent hyperactivity, impulsivity and inattention, although not all of them can be present” (p. v). Children may appear to be vague, defiant, take excessive risks, or have difficulty completing simple tasks compared to their peers. In addition to an ADHD diagnosis, children may also present with comorbidities such as learning deficits, mood disorders, and antisocial characteristics (Ministry of Health, 2001). Goldstein (1995, as cited in Gol and Jarus, 2005) and Cantwell (1996, as cited in Gol and Jarus, 2005) explain that referral to mental health services is common among children with this chronic behavioral problem. For parents needing advice to address their concerns, a first point of contact may be a GP where symptoms can be discussed and a referral to an appropriate service considered. As Laver-Bradbury (2013) points out, it is recommended to use clinicians from a child mental health service or pediatric setting, although McGonnell, Corkum, McKinnon, MacPherson, Williams, Davidson, Jones and Stephenson (2007) suggest that waiting lists for services can be detrimental. .
