    Ever since Vince McMahon prospered by turning WWE into a global empire, there have been many competitors vying to knock him off his perch. In the 1980s, countless regional organizations attempted to compete with WWE (then WWF) on a national level. These companies included UWF, owned by Bill Watts, Verne Gagnes AWA and the famous NWA. None of them had the resources or business acumen to match McMahon. In the 1990s, Turner-owned World Championship Wrestling spawned a viable foe for WWE. At its peak, WCW was outpacing WWE in house shows and conquering them every week in the Monday Night War ratings. However, in the late 90s, WCW did the same. Led by “Stone Cold” Steve Austin and The Rock, WWE has once again triumphed. In 2002, former WCW Heavyweight Champion Jeff Jarrett, alongside his father, longtime promoter Jerry Jarrett, the two started Total Nonstop Action.
