  • Essay / Racism in the Criminal Justice System - 1333

I learned that defining criminal behavior and finding effective solutions to deal with people who violate the laws is complex. The goal of the correctional system should be to rehabilitate and reintegrate as many people as possible into society with the skills they need to lead successful and productive lives. It appears that integrating more services into the correctional process would help prevent incarceration rates from increasing. Specific services such as substance abuse treatment, mental health care, education, and vocational training should be provided at each stage of the correctional process, from the pretrial phase through the duration of incarceration. Arrestees should receive services that are most likely to rehabilitate them and, if possible, prevent them from entering prison. Without examining each individual's situation and providing individualized services, it is likely that they will continue to commit crimes and return to prison because they have not learned new skills to create opportunities for different way.
