Anna Freud was born on December 3, 1895, to Sigmund and Martha Freud. Anna was the youngest of six children. She was a child full of life and known to be mischievous. She grew up somewhat in the shadow of her sister Sophie, who was almost three years older than her. As a child, Anna was exceptionally close to Freud. Anna did not have a close relationship with Martha Freud and was said to have had rather dysfunctional relationships with her siblings. She attended a private school, but did not enjoy the experience. The majority of his education was learned directly from the teachings of Sigmund and his friends and associates. Anna completed her studies at the Cottage Lyceum in Vienna in 1912, but remained completely undecided about the direction of her career. In 1914, she traveled alone to England to improve her English. She was present when war was declared and therefore became an enemy. The war forced him to return to Vienna with the Austrian-Hungarian ambassador.
