Essay / First impressions but both titles are very suitable for the novel. The characters Elizabeth Bennet and Fitzwilliam Darcy based their perceptions of each other on their first impressions; and then it was Elizabeth's pride and Darcy's prejudices that separated them. Both of these characters were dynamic characters, and only by changing their ways were they able to find love and develop a relationship together, which eventually led to marriage between them. This is shown several times throughout the novel. It is evident that Elizabeth Bennet developed a negative first impression of Fitzwilliam Darcy quite early in the novel. When they first meet at the ball, he says, “She’s tolerable; but not beautiful enough to tempt me; I'm not in the mood to give consequences to young girls who are looked down upon by other men. You'd better go back to your partner and enjoy her smiles, because you're wasting your time with me." This quote is very significant to the novel, as it is the one that triggers Elizabeth's first impression of Darcy - and marks the beginning of his novel's unfair prejudice against him. This prejudice was rather ironic, because the aspects of Darcy's personality that Elizabeth did not like were those that she also related to. For example, like Darcy, Elizabeth. has a sharp tongue and doesn't always think before she speaks. It's this sharp tongue that made him talk about Elizabeth in this way - so it's not fair for Elizabeth to shame him for it. Later, when Darcy proposes to her, she says, "...From Darcy the moment I met you, your arrogance and your vanity and your selfish disdain for other people's feelings made me realize that. you are the last man in the world I could ever defeat. His excessive pride was a contributing factor to Elizabeth's prejudice against him. through the quote I included in the previous paragraph: “It is tolerable; but not beautiful enough to tempt me; I'm not in the mood to give consequences to young girls who are looked down upon by other men. You better go back to your partner and enjoy her smiles, because you are wasting your time with me. " Darcy says this at the ball, when Bingley suggests that he dance with Elizabeth. Obviously, Darcy has excessive pride and he focuses on the details about her, it should not be significant in his perception of her - like the fact that she is not "beautiful enough" and that she is "despised by other men". His pride is also shown when he proposes to Elizabeth He says: "In vain I have." "My feelings will not be repressed. You must allow me to tell you how ardently I admire and love you." Although he may have had good intentions, his pride finally showed through. Hearing these words from Darcy, Elizabeth noticed that he was placing more emphasis on the fact that he is in love with her despite his low rank in society, instead of putting it forward. the emphasis on his love for her. Darcy's pride regarding his higher status is shown through his attempt to express his love, and Elizabeth was unimpressed by this, so she rejects his proposal.
