Essay / Impact of Olaudah Equiano on the New World - 1205
How did the interactions of Africans and Europeans create a “New World”? that is, what kind of impact did Olaudah Equiano have on his environment and vice versa? Olaudoh Equiano projected a new world in which Africans and Europeans could progress if they got rid of racial prejudices and worked honestly together. But before we get into how interactions between Africans and Europeans created a “New World,” we first need to know what kind of person Olaudoh Equiano was. Olaudoh Equiano was born in 1745, he was also known as Gustavus Vassa (his slave name). He was captured and enslaved as a child in his hometown of Essaka (located in Africa). Equiano worked as an author, merchant, sailor and hairdresser. He was shipped to the West Indies, then moved to England where he managed to purchase his freedom and finally settled in 1792. He married an Englishwoman and had two children. Equaino wrote an autobiography, The Interesting Account of the Life of Olaudah Equiano, which depicts the horrors of slavery and tells Equiano's story as a slave and the path to freedom in the New World. I believe that the major creation of the New World centers on the destructive nature of the slave trade. Equiano's life is a testament to how terrible the slave trade was to him and others. For example, being “cargo” on a slave ship was a terrifying experience for Equiano. He said: “I was soon deposited below decks, and there I received in my nostrils such a greeting as I had never known in my life; so that with the loathsome stench and crying together, I became so ill and depressed that I could not eat, nor had the slightest desire to taste anything. I now wished for the last friend, Death…” (55-56). Af...... middle of paper ...... no and many other slaves worked aggressively, from morning to night, with no pay, insufficient food and water, almost no shelter and very little of clothes. This “New World” into which Equiano had been forced had already been created before him. The addition of African American slaves transformed an average country into the “New World.” Violence, racism, and the whole ordeal of the slave trade brought new things inside and outside of people that didn't really exist before. It brought out the demons in the slave owners (although not all of them were horrible) and it also brought out a new level of despair in the slaves, to the point that they welcomed death and hoped that there would be no tomorrow for them. The creation of the "New World" had a bad beginning, but despite all the difficulties, Equiano created a rewarding ending for himself that would influence other slaves..
