Mindfulness is a tool that can be used to improve any aspect of life. The law enforcement field is very stressful. In the field, people are surrounded by negativity almost every day, both on and off the job. Traumatic events that happen at work are brought into their personal lives because a person simply cannot get the images or idea of what happened out of their mind. This can lead to a negative side effect if not handled appropriately in order to safely and intelligently overcome the negative aspects of the job and only retain the positives that come with this type of work. With all the pressure put on law enforcement professionals, mindfulness is something that could help people cope with everything. Law enforcement has long hours, difficult work, high stress, and requires a person to be able to respond quickly. Taking all these factors into account would help improve work and professional life. Police officers would greatly improve the way they deal with suspects if they would think mindfully. The Hillsboro Police Department has launched a mindfulness program for its officers. The Hillsboro Police Department launched a mindfulness program in the spring of 2013. The department uses mindfulness for several reasons. The Hillsboro Police Department has had a troubled past. In January 2013, one of the agency's agents was involved in a shootout with police at his home. He was drunk and off duty when he fired his AR-15. Some Hillsboro officers responded to the call and some were friends with the former cop. The incident shook the department and the rank and file did not trust its leaders.
