Essay / Military Action, Operation Urgent Fury - 899
This article is a perspective on the military actions that took place in October 1983 during the administration of President Ronald Reagan; this conflict was named Operation Urgent Fury. We must first understand why relations between Grenada and the United States began to deteriorate and understand the communist influence of Cuba and the Soviet Union in Grenada. The threat posed by anti-American Marxists to the nearly six hundred American students who lived in Grenada was a danger we could not tolerate. The United States had aid to the Caribbean islands that would be threatened by communist influence in that region, but we had to respond immediately and almost perfectly to succeed. The island of Grenada is located in the eastern Caribbean and it is somewhat oval in shape and measures approximately 120 square miles. In Granada, English is the predominant language but French patois is still spoken in many places. Grenadians are mostly black and of Christian faith, but a small number of whites can be found on the island due to its Spanish influence since its discovery by Christopher Columbus. The volcanic terrain and due to its average temperatures of 80 degrees Fahrenheit, Grenada produces a lot of vegetation consisting mainly of fruits and dense woods. In 1979, Maurice Bishop took power while the island was going through difficult economic times. Moscow and Havana quickly took advantage of Bishop's takeover of the island, and within three days they sent Cuban ships full of weapons and construction materials. In November 1979, Bishop announced that Grenada would begin construction of a 10,000-foot runway for a new airport on its southwest island called Point Salines. The problem with building this airstrip was that Cuba was... middle of paper ...... all the mistakes that took place during Operation Urgent Fury, this showed that we must continue to conduct joint training with all other branches. The United States won the Battle of Grenada and showed the world that we can be ready in just a few hours and attack any desired target very quickly. The American people gained a sense of confidence from this conflict and I am sure it greatly boosted the morale of the American soldiers. Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Army General John W Vessey said: “We planned the operation in a very short time frame, approximately 48 hours. We planned it with insufficient intelligence for the type of operation we wanted to conduct. As a result, we probably used more force than necessary to get the job done, but the operation went relatively well... Things went wrong, but overall the operation was a success. The troops did very well”
