Essay / Censorship Essay - Don't Censor Child Pornography obscenity banning the display of "material harmful to minors". The materials in question were two books containing photographs of nude children: Radiant Identities by Jock Sturges and The Age of Innocence by David Hamilton. Since then, the activist right Randall Terry has launched a crusade to force bookstores to remove the "criminal trash" of Sturges, Hamilton and (recently added to his list of demons) Sally Mann from their shelves (bookweb). issued a call to right-wing supporters, urging them to go to bookstores and tear out the offending pages from targeted books. Several bookstores across the country have fallen prey to Terry's vandals. In response to these incidents and the threat of future public vandalism, Barnes & Noble recently issued a notice to each of its more than 1,000 stores ordering them to place the disputed documents under lock and key and allow customers to view them only in presence. of a store manager (apocalypse 9709). This response is shocking. This is upsetting because it means that, in several significant ways, Terry has won. It's true that no one (yet) has put Sturges or the others in jail (as Terry has called for), but the public's right to view the alleged "pornographic" content of their work has been significantly diminished. by the action of Barnes & Noble. In recognizing the threat posed by Terry and his small group of supporters, B&N reaffirmed its contention that the work of the named photographers must be separated from the “decent” public. He installs surveillance technology that, middle of paper, makes me think that it would be rather unlikely for a young child to stumble upon the work of a contemporary professional photographer. They will need to know something about this photographer, know what their work is about and how to access it. This means that, in the case of these photographers, the child would have to have knowledge of nudity, art, and photography to want to seek them out. If he/she already knows something about these topics, what harm will it cause by looking at naked bodies?
