Essay / The Role of Women in Girls By Jamaica Kincaid - 1101
Since the very beginning of history, women have been portrayed as insignificant compared to men in society. Men viewed a woman's purpose as being a housewife, having children, and taking care of household chores. Yet, from a young age, girls were taught the tasks they were expected to perform and that they were expected to continue into adulthood. This ideal according to which a woman's duty was to take charge of household chores was then passed down from generation to generation, until today. However, this ideology depends on the culture and generation in which mothers were raised and what they decide to teach their daughters about these roles. Once women were given the opportunity to receive education and be treated as equals, society's beliefs took a turn regarding the role of women in society. Yet there always seems to be a question among women seeking personal identity and expectations from their parents. Jamaica Kincaid's short story "Girl" is about being a young woman in a poor country. This is seen because Kincaid's complicated relationship with her own mother is illustrated by the mother-daughter dynamic of the story. As I continued reading the story, I saw the mother's bitterness and concern grow towards her daughter as she became a teenager. Throughout the story, the mother would tell her daughter, "this is how you do it...and you have to act like it", forcing the young women to act and be someone she doesn't. didn't want to be. It was like she was protecting her daughter and didn't want her to ruin her life. Throughout the story, the mother would explain to her daughter how to do household chores in a certain way. So when she became a woman, she knew how to accomplish them.
