Essay / Ethical Issues Surrounding Stem Cell Research - 1538
People who support stem cell research claim that stem cells have the potential to cure and improve the treatment of disease. Stem cells can potentially cure spinal cord injuries, multiple sclerosis, diabetes, Parkinson's disease, cancer, Alzheimer's disease, heart disease, stroke, diabetes, birth defects and genetic disorders. People opposed to stem cell research cite ethical concerns that it would be immoral to destroy a human embryo a few days old simply to save or reduce the suffering of an existing human life. But people support stem cell research and say it's better to donate embryos than resort to abortion. Many people also point out that even with all this support and money, no cure has yet been produced through embryonic stem cell therapy. On March 9, 2009, President Obama announced his embryonic stem cell research project by providing financial assistance for scientific research.
