Since January 2006, Kennesaw State University has had a restrictive smoking policy. This means that smokers are permitted to use tobacco products, but only in designated smoking areas on campus (“Smoking”). Recently, the AL Burruss Institute for Public Service and Research sent out an email asking students and faculty whether or not they think Kennesaw State University should become a smoke-free campus ("KSU") . In response to this increase in discussion about smoking, I conducted my own survey to see how Kennesaw students and faculty feel about having a smoke-free campus. In a survey of 64 participants, 17 out of 64 agreed that the campus should be smoke-free. 24 out of 64 thought smoking shouldn't be banned, and 23 out of 64 didn't care anyway. Based on this information, it appears that the majority are against the idea of ​​banning smoking on the Kennesaw campus. The survey results supported my theory that most students would not want a smoke-free campus, but I also wanted to see if different demographic groups had different opinions on the subject. It turns out that women and first-year students had more opinions on the topic, while men and second-year or older students tended not to care as much, see Figure 1. When I compared female participants to male participants, only 28% of women responded that they did not care about the smoking ban on the Kennesaw campus, compared to only 45% of men. The same was found for the number of years a participant had been a college student. The longer the years of learning, the higher the percentage of “I don’t care” responses. The trick now is to find a good plan to balance those who use tobacco products and those who don't want to use them at all.
