  • Essay / Proper Nutrition During a Baby's First Year - 844

The first year of a baby's life is a time of rapid change and knowing who to trust in the world. During the first year, many things happen that are very important for the infant's future. This stage of life is a period of “rapid development of the physical and nervous system, of accomplishments that ensure the infant's survival and ability to cope with the world” (Dacey et al., 2009). Babies gain weight quickly during the first year, so nutrition is a very important part of the developmental process. They need a good diet consisting of “carbohydrates, proteins, minerals and vitamins” (Dacey et al., 2009). Good nutrition ensures the proper development and survival of newborns. “Having survived prenatal hazards, newborns are equipped with automatic responses perfectly adapted to survival” (Myers, 2008). The first year of a baby's life is very important to ensure a successful journey into their future. The nature versus nurture debate has been studied for many years. Years ago, many people thought that human behavior was “instinctive, just our nature” (Macionis, 2008). Are people born with a predetermined plot about what their life will bring? Many researchers have done numerous studies that have proven that human behavior stems from how a person was nourished after birth. Biology and nature mean the same thing, and we are biologically programmed at birth to do certain things. For example, at birth, a person's heart beats on its own and the baby knows how to suck instantly. This shows the natural side of humans. The way a child was raised when they were born has a direct impact on their future. One of the most famous experiments on attachment is Harlow's monkey experiment. After watching a video of the monkeys' experiences, the conclusion is that ... middle of paper ... it is better to stay in this particular daycare or choose a more suitable one. Parents who cannot afford quality child care may face negative behaviors from their babies. Babies are tiny little humans who need a lot of love and guidance to be able to cope with the challenges of everyday life. Works Cited Harlow's Monkey Experiment. (April 14, 2008).
