Essay / The Theme of Big Government in "Ender's Game" by Orson Scott Card
Big government can create dangers in people's lives by taking away their rights. In Ender's Game by Orson Scott Card, a young boy is taken from his family at the age of 6 and sent to a combat school in military-controlled space. Ender is from the United States, but at the combat school, students come from all over the world. Throughout the book Ender is placed in various armies that train the kids at the battle school to one day be able to command an army to defeat the enemy buggers, who they have had previous wars with with two to be exact. Ender was seen as the next war hero and was recognized early on as a threat to others at the combat school. This recognition was brought about by the military professionals who manipulated and isolated him. It is therefore dangerous to have a large and controlling government. Say no to plagiarism. Get an original essay I chose this topic because in the story there are various clues about how the government used this “school of combat” to eliminate the essential rights of human beings. Life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. They suppressed life by setting the maximum number of children a family could have at two. Ender is what you would call a Third. For example, in the text it says: "It was not his fault that he was a third party." It was the government's idea, they authorized it. How else could a Third like Ender have gotten into the school? Even if a family wanted more than two children, they would have to manage it through the government which talks about control. They also suppressed freedom, in other words freedom. At the combat school, everything is monitored, including the letters they receive from home. Children are also taken from their families and used for military purposes, which is ridiculous considering the ordeal they put them through. Almost any conversation can be recorded and used against them. From early childhood, the government places a monitor on children's necks. These monitors record everything the child hears or sees, to find out if they would be the right fit for combat school. Thus, all members of this house would have their freedom limited by a walking, talking military recording device. Ultimately, the military took away their pursuit of happiness, each of these children had their childhood ripped away from them and had to begin developing their own identity early in life. The teachers who were supposed to make him feel safe at school played with Ender's feelings. He is also supposed to be developing quickly and not at the age he is supposed to be, he was the youngest commander while in combat school and was given insane tasks to complete without any prior knowledge that he was going to get them. I chose to make a PowerPoint explaining what the government is doing. They cage the rights, emotions and values of these people. The book specifies: “These other armies are not the enemies, they are the teachers.” In the students' minds, the only reason they go to this school is to get better at fighting, but slowly Ender begins to see the bigger picture thanks to his Dink friends who begin to help him understand what adults also do, that is to say military professionals. I also chose this because the government takes over and, in my mind, turns everyone into robots, destroying all the relationships and true human emotions they have left. One thing I have..
