American schools are running out of time. While Japan excels in math and science, America lags behind. After a summer vacation in America, teachers can take up to 6 weeks to review what students learned the previous year. Implementing a year-round school schedule will help narrow the gap between America and foreign countries and benefit the population because it will increase the number of students a school can accommodate , will make it easier for families to enjoy recess and could increase retention. students. According to WCPSS, a school that operates on a year-round schedule can serve 20 to 33 percent more students than a school on a regular schedule. The way a year-round school schedule works is that a grade level is divided into 4 groups. When one group is at recess, the other three groups are at school. This rotates so that only 3 groups are in school at any given time. This means that more students can be accommodated and schools can be more efficient. Opponents of year-round schooling might argue that it increases costs for states because of additional air conditioning, heating, electricity and food costs caused by the new schedule. Air conditioning and heating costs increase when school is open in the winter and in the summer when traditional schools are on break. Electricity costs go up because of the money needed to run the school more frequently, and food costs go up because the school has to prepare more food for more students. But in reality, schools with year-round schedules can potentially save the government money, because even though it takes more money to operate, it eliminates the need to build more buildings.
