Essay / Should nudity in art and on the internet be allowed?
The citizens of Canada live in a democracy that gave us all the First Amendment and fundamental rights. The First Amendment Bill of Rights was made for the people and by the people because our country's founders understood the importance of free speech. The First Amendment states that "Everyone shall enjoy the following fundamental freedoms: ...freedom of thought, belief, opinion, and expression, including freedom of the press and other media of communication." This alone should mean that there should be no government intervention on a code of ethics or morality. As citizens, we should be able to enjoy complete freedom of choice. To the extent that the Internet gives voice to people who otherwise would not have a say, it should not be policed. Our government was put in place by the people to legislate and maintain order in our society, but it has begun to make decisions for us about what is appropriate and what is not. The most recent example of this is Canada's Internet Censorship Bill C-54 of 1987, which states that the Internet should be censored and subject to restrictions. Internet regulation will tend to restrict freedom of expression. The Internet is a modern symbol of the freedom of expression we enjoy in our society. The government has no right to tell us what we can and cannot do at home. Since no one is forcing anyone to access a specific area of the Internet, we make our choices according to our own will. I think the government is clearly violating our rights. Many skeptics disagree that nudity in art should have a place in our society. Some say that certain groups in our society, such as children, should not see this type of work. Art censorship has been practiced on numerous occasions, in which an institution banned a certain...... middle of paper ......ng with a controversial subject matter. It is parents who should monitor and regulate their children's activities, not the government. Parents should monitor what their children watch on the Internet as well as what they hear on the radio and cassette tapes. Censorship is an issue that will continue to be debated for many years. Material on the Internet, explicit lyrics in music, and nudity in art are topics that should be treated with caution, but never censored. Violation of the First Amendment must never be allowed for fear of further oppression by the government. Therefore, censorship should not be imposed on citizens by the government or other agencies, because everyone has the right to freedom and expression. If the government abandoned its system of censorship entirely, I am convinced that people would have the ability to censor themselves what they perceive to be right and wrong..
