Essay / Essay on Music and Music - 1155
Music has affected society throughout history. Music has existed since the dawn of time. The influence of music on modern society is easily seen today. Music has been proven to have many influences on humans, both positive and negative. Music has been proven to change a person's mood and cause physical reactions in many people simultaneously. The mind is able to focus better, as the body becomes more relaxed and alert. Technology has greatly affected the effect of music on the brain and the way society perceives, absorbs and creates music. Scientists have proven that humans respond to music since birth. Brain specialist Elena Mannes has recorded the relationship with music throughout a human being's life. Mannes even went far enough to say that the cries of babies just a few weeks old exhibited intervals common to Western music. She also says scientists believe music stimulates more parts of the brain than any other human function. With this knowledge, she realizes that music has enormous potential when it comes to affecting the brain and its functioning. One of the main areas of the brain that music can have a real effect on is neurological deficits (Mannes INT). For example, if a patient who has just suffered a stroke loses verbal functions, these functions can be stimulated by music. It's called melodic intonation therapy and could help patients regain speech. The human brain is divided into two parts, the left hemisphere and the right hemisphere. The right hemisphere is traditionally considered the “seat of music appreciation.” However, the right side has in no way been proven for this role (Joelving INT). An important thing to realize is how the brain breathes...... middle of paper ......ee exactly what force the power of music exists and will become in the future. Numerous studies have proven this. For example, one study shows that students who study music in high school get better grades than those who don't. The reason is that listening to music makes you think more efficiently and improves your memory. Society has relied so much on music that without it, life would change as we know it today. Every culture created throughout history has some form of music, demonstrating that music is fundamental to life. Although people think of music as just entertainment, it actually goes much deeper. Music is now being used as therapy, radicalizing the way people perceive sound. People can lower their blood pressure, find happiness through depression, and recover from major surgery through the power of music..
