  • Essay / This Knight is a Lucky Duck: The Wife of Bath

One of the Canterbury Tales written by Geoffrey Chaucer is a story told by the Wife of Bath about a knight. In the story, the knight gets in trouble for raping a woman. At that time, the punishment for such a crime was death. The knight stands before the king and queen, expecting to be sentenced to death. Something really weird is happening. The queen decides that since the knight is such a handsome man, he should be spared. This is simply unfair. Unfortunately, I can think of some modern cases where people are treated unfairly because of their physical appearance. Either way, this knight must have been a hunk to avoid such punishment with nothing but his appearance to defend him. The queen gives him a year to find the answer to a question. Of course, when I read that, I was like, “Oh, wow. He comes out very easily. A year is more than enough to find the answer to all the questions I could ask. This queen is stupid. The next few words changed my mind. The knight had to find the one thing that all women desire. Then I started something along these lines. "Okay, ma'am. Humanity has existed for hundreds of thousands of years, even millions of years, and no man has ever managed to find the answer to this question. How is this stupid knight doing? -he find him in a year? Have you lost your mind? I guess I was wrong, because indeed, a year later, the knight found the answer. He asked him. she gave him the answer. The knight replied this answer to the queen and he was released Hooray! I'm sure he was about to ride off into the sunset and go do chivalry stuff, but the. old woman kind of ruined it for him The knight remembered that he owed the old... middle of paper ... to a total baby The moral of this story is that you can't trust. to the system, man. The knight went against what was common for men at that time, and he was greatly rewarded Patriarchy is just a stupid result of the misconception that the. men are better than women. Chaucer intended to refute this misconception and alleviate the effects of strict patriarchy in England. I like the way he uses satire and his obvious understanding of how the minds of young men work to convince men to treat women as equals. I'm starting to sound a bit like a feminist. Yeah ! I agree with Chaucer that men and women should treat each other equally, but some feminists are really crazy and irrational! Chaucer is a very intelligent man, as shown by the way he structured this story. I think it was probably very effective in changing the way men treated women. It's a very beautiful story.
