Jules Cheret was born on May 31, 1836 in Paris into a family of artisans. Cheret was forced to end his studies prematurely, at the age of 13, because his family was unable to meet the expenses. Because his studies ended so early, Cheret was enrolled in a three-year apprenticeship with a lithographer. Lithography is the process of printing from a flat, smooth surface, such as limestone or a metal plate, prepared so that only the ink adheres to the surface. The British approach to poster design heavily influenced Cheret, and on his return to France later in life he began creating posters for music halls and theaters. Pippermint is an advertising poster published by Jules Cheret in 1899; the dimensions of the poster are 14" x 20", painted on canvas. The Pipperment poster is an advertisement for Pipperment Liquor.
