  • Essay / Renewable Energy: Solar Energy - 1041

Renewable energy is energy that can be used again and again. It never runs out. It's also better for the environment. I think renewable energy is definitely an option for South Africa in the near future. There are many different forms of renewable energy and I will talk about which forms of renewable energy would be most suitable in South Africa. Solar energy would probably be the most successful form of renewable energy in South Africa. The reason I say this is because South Africa is a country known for its sunny climate. This fact is true since South Africa is the 5th sunniest country in the world1. There are different ways to capture the sun's rays to convert them into electricity. Probably the most efficient method of harvesting energy just for your household would be the solar water heating method. The way it works is that it uses heat from the sun to heat a liquid inside the cylinders. The liquid then turns into gas which powers the generator which creates electricity. The solar water heating method is more efficient than the photovoltaic method because the latter converts light directly into electricity. This means that the photovoltaic method cannot store electricity and can only work when there is sunshine2. So for the solar water heating method, if the weather was overcast and rainy, you would probably still have enough electricity to meet all the essential needs because the electricity would have been stored. A solar water heating system costs around R20,000, so the cost is initially high, but in the long run it is very efficient as your electricity supply is free. The government could also consider investing in a solar oven. This is a massive collection... middle of paper ...... invest lightning in electricity in the near future. In conclusion, I think we should continue to use the rest of the available fossil fuels, but governments around the world should start considering using only renewable energy. We could potentially store fossil fuels and use them as a reserve, as not all forms of renewable energy are completely reliable. But that said, we should also learn to conserve our energy and do small things like turn off the light when we leave our room. Even if the government doesn't start thinking about renewable energy any time soon, there's nothing stopping you from investing in your own solar geyser or trying to get involved in promoting this newer form of energy. It's good for you because you save money and good for the future of the Earth because it reduces emissions into the Earth's atmosphere..
