In recent times, our country has made a lot of progress in many fields such as science and technology, health, education, food security, etc. Progress is encouraging in some areas, but the education sector does not receive the attention it deserves. Disadvantaged members of society, in particular, are far behind in reaping the benefits of modern education. Some might wonder whether it is important to educate these people, when the basic amenities of food, water and shelter are also beyond their reach. Isn’t it necessary that the main goal be to provide these basic elements? The answer is that education can very easily solve most problems that otherwise require a lot of effort. For example, if a poor person is educated, he can find a job. This job opportunity will help him feed his family members, provide them with health care, shelter and education. So education will help in a cyclical manner. It is undeniable that education is essential for oppressed people. This is the only way by which poverty can be overcome. More than 60 years have passed since independence and yet poverty is present in our country. Political parties have not shown enough will to resolve this problem. So, instead of depending on government grants and handouts, the poor should be educated so that they can earn a decent living. The question now arises of how to educate these people. Many challenges are present to achieve this objective. Some of the major challenges are: 1) Public schools are unable to provide quality education. 2) Private schools are too expensive for these people to finance. 3) There is a lack of awareness among these people. 4) Our educational policy is not favorable to these people. The above challenges can be addressed, but we need a strong framework with an honest implementation and monitoring mechanism. First, we must understand that the demands of oppressed people are totally different from those of middle-class or upper-class people.
