Unit 1: An Only Child I will discuss how each child is unique and how they learn and progress. I will explain the benefits of meeting individual needs and how a practitioner can promote children's physical and emotional wellbeing in the early years setting. I will then describe how the principles of anti-discrimination practices can be applied and why it is important to plan activities to meet individual needs. A unique child Every child has individual and unique needs that must be met for him or her to thrive. Ways in which a practitioner can meet these needs include: • Understanding and observing a child's development and learning abilities. Progress can then be assessed and next steps can be planned to ensure the child continues to develop.• Help babies and children develop a positive view of themselves and their culture.• Identify needs additional help.• Keep children safe.• Value and respect children and their families equally. There are three factors that are interrelated in a child's development: growth, development and learning. These factors can be influenced by the child's experiences, environment and genetic factors. Children develop at their own pace and children of the same age will not necessarily develop the same knowledge and skills. Early Childhood Development Issues informs practitioners about child development from birth to 60 months and beyond. It is important that each child meets their individual needs so that they can progress in their development. Activities should always be differentiated so that all children, including children with disabilities or disabilities, are included in all activities.
