  • Essay / Humanity and its way of losing itself - 1039

Reason slowly fades, and savagery slowly takes its place. In the book, Lord of the Flies, a group of young boys, ages 3 to 13, escape from their all-boys school on a plane. But unfortunately, the boys' plane is attacked and the boys end up on a deserted island, and all the adults are dead. The boys take it upon themselves to survive until they are rescued, but being on this island for so long, the boys soon lose who they are. Some don't want to be rescued, and some have just lost it completely. Lives and personalities are lost to the encroaching savagery of the island. Throughout the book, Golding shows how the boys on the island slowly become lost. The barbaric influence of the island on the boys is first evident in their appearance. “Her blond hair, considerably longer than it had been when they arrived, was lighter now; and her bare back was a mass of dark freckles and peeling sunburns” (Golding, 48). After weeks of being under the island's blazing sun, the boys' hair became longer and lighter. Their hair fell in front of their face, reaching their nose and/or chin. All the boys' skin turned dark brown, all sunburned and flaky. It looks like they are native to the island. As if they were born there. Golding shows the savagery of the boys by making them lose their civilized appearance. Their appearances even took a turn for the greater when they discovered how to paint. “He whitened one cheek and one eye socket, then he rubbed red all over the other half of his face and cut a bar of black charcoal in front of the right ear. to the left jaw” (Golding, 63 years old). In the book, the boys had started painting themselves, in order to...... middle of paper ......wn. And it was not a righteous death, but a death that was not supposed to happen, an innocent and unjust death. They had really gotten lost on the island. Being lost on an island for so long can make a human lose who they are. Regardless of their age, Golding had written this book with many ideas in mind. But what stands out most is the humanity in humans and what happens to them. In his book, almost all of the boys' humanity is lost. With the lives of three people. When one moves away from the civilization one has known most of one's life, one's civilized state most of the time disappears. Due to the fear and thrill of things, the humanity within a person can be easily lost and it may never return. But we'll never really know. Works Cited Golding, William. Lord of the Flies.
